French Ambassador to the United States Gerard Araud had high praise for Utah and the state’s dual immersion language education efforts during a visit to students at Oak Hollow Elementary in Draper on Thursday.
Ambassador Araud, joined by House Speaker Greg Hughes and administrators from the Utah Office of Education and the Canyon’s School District, said he came away impressed with the levels of linguistic proficiency on display. Ambassador Araud said it was especially exciting hearing first-graders speaking his mother tongue after only studying French for a few months.
Utah is second only to the state of New York for having the most schools offering French dual immersion studies, which was one reason, Ambassador Araud said, he came to the Beehive State to witness first-hand. During Thursday’s visit, Oak Hollow students performed songs and skits, shared lessons and conducted an interview with the ambassador in French, of course.
