House majority elects leadership team

Republicans in the House of Representatives have chosen their leadership team for the next two years.

Current Speaker of the House Becky Lockhart, R-Provo, was chosen to serve another term. Lockhart is a registered nurse and has been serving in the House since 1999.

“I’m honored to have been chosen a second time,” Lockhart said. “The work of the House is critical to issues like education, energy development and transportation which drive Utah’s nation-leading economy.”

• Majority Leader Brad Dee, R-Ogden, was chosen to serve another term as well. Dee is the human resource director of Weber County and has been serving in the House since 2003.

“This is a strong team that will lead a House majority that is both fiscally wise and in touch with the needs of the people of Utah,” Dee said.

• The Majority Whip will be Rep. Greg Hughes, R-Draper, for the second time. Hughes is in the construction and property management business and has been serving in the House since 2003.

• The Assistant Majority Whip will be Rep. Don Ipson, R-St. George. Ipson is president and CEO of Dats Trucking and has been serving in the House since 2009.

The leadership team conveys the will of House Republicans in such matters as budget negotiations and policy decisions. Republicans will control 61 of the House’s 75 seats for the upcoming general session in January.
