Recently, a student from Hillcrest High School was shot and injured in front of nearby Union Middle School in Sandy. Erin Hemingway, a teacher at the middle school, acted quickly to intervene and potentially save the lives of other students in the vicinity.
The injured student had been shot multiple times in the head when Hemingway stepped in front of the perpetrator, a student at Union Middle School, took away the gun and ordered him to the ground. She then administered aid to the critically injured victim.
We will never know how many lives were saved due to the heroic actions of this teacher. She was recently recognized on the floor of the House and received a standing ovation as an expression of gratitude for her actions.
Our schools are full of teachers like Erin Hemingway. We are grateful for the love and dedication they exhibit every day as they teach and serve our children. While this incident highlighted the selfless actions of one individual in a dire situation, simple acts of heroism and sacrifice can be found daily throughout the halls of the schools of our state. To those who dedicate their lives to loving and teaching our youth, we offer our sincerest thanks.
