Overview of the Day

Speaker Greg Hughes presented his concurrent resolution, H.C.R. 11, urging the President to rescind the Bears Ears National Monument Designation to the House floor earlier this morning. After an open and impassioned debate, H.C.R. 11 passed 60-14-1.

H.C.R. 12 was also debated on the House floor this morning, urging federal legislation to reduce or modify the boundaries of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.  H.C.R. 12, presented by Representative Mike Noel, passed 61-13-1.

The Budget:

One of the most important responsibility state legislators have is to pass a balanced budget. You may have heard that this isn’t a “good” budget year. However, our analyst predicted the budget so accurately that it will be a standard budget year, which happens to follow after a few years of budget surplus. The base budget for FY2018 is about $15.2 billion, which is around $100 million more than the FY2017 budget. Typically, the largest part of the state’s budget, about 30 percent, goes to public education.
